Fox Cover

Translation by Bin Hu

“Well, young lady,” my grandmother said with a very serious look on her face as she pulled the bread out of the oven, “Did you know the fox wasn’t always red?”
“hǎo ba, niánqīng de nǚshì,” wǒ nǎinai yībiān bǎ miànbāo cóng kǎoxiāng zhōng ná chūlái yībiān kàn shàngqù yǒuxiē yánsù de shuōdao,“nǐ zhīdào húlí bìng bù yīzhí shì hóngsè de ma?”

I hopped up in a chair and got comfortable as I shook my head no. I knew grandmother was about to tell me another story.

“Way back in long ago times, the fox was white. In fact there are still a few white ones,” Grandmother said as she seated herself beside me.
“huí dào hěn zǎo yǐqián, húlí shì báisè de. Érqiě zhídào xiànzài hái yǒu yīxiē shì báisè de”, nǎinai shuōzhe bìng zuò dàole wǒ pángbiān.

“But,” she said, “way back then, they were all white.”
“dànshì”, tā shuō dào,“zài guòqù nà shí hòu, tāmen quán shì bái de”

“Then one day, a little boy fox went out to play. His mother told him to be sure to keep his pretty white fur nice and clean.”
“hòulái yǒu yītiān, yīgè xiǎo gōng húlí chūqù wán. Tā māmā gàosu tā yīdìng yào bǎochí piàoliang de bái máo gàn gānjìng jìng.“

“Now she knew,” Grandmother said, “that he wouldn’t because we all know little boys are full of mischief.”
“xiànzài tā zhīdào,” nǎinai shuō,“tā bù kěnéng bǎochí, yīnwèi wǒmen dōu zhīdào xiǎo nánháimen dōu tài táoqìle.”

“So, off the little fox went, across the meadow.
“Jiù zhèyàng xiǎo húlí chuānguò cǎodì wán qùle.”

He decided he was going to see how many things he could go over, under and through.

Well, the first thing he saw was a fence. It looked very tempting,” grandmother told me, “because the space between the wooden rails was pretty small.”

“He had his tail straight out and just as he got to the fence, he tucked his little feet up close to his body and flew through the fence.”

“tā shì rúcǐ de xīngfèn, gāoxìng de wéizhe cǎodì hé huā cóng tiàozhe pǎozhe.”

“túrán, tā juéde shénme dōngxi zhuàngle tā de bízi. Tā tái qǐtóu kàn dào yī zhǐ húdié zhèngzài fēiwǔ.“

“Pretty soon, his nose started to tickle, and … A-CHOO, he sneezed.”
“hěn kuài, tā de bízi jiù kāishǐ fā yǎngle, jiēzhe... Ā, qiū, tā dǎle gè pēntì.”

“Well now, when he sneezed,” grandmother said, “a spray of yellow butterfly dust flew all around his head.”
“zhè xià kě hǎo, dāng tā dǎ pēntì shí,” nǎinai shuō dào,“huángsè de húdié de fěnchén pù mǎnle tā de tóu.”
